The Ancient Maya, having nothing to do with mighty rivers 

 

In Tikal, which is located in the low-land of southern Maya, water is collected by making its land sloped intentionally. What is more, it is considered water saved in the upper part of the land was used for drinking, and a portion of it floated and accumulated in the lower was reused for agriculture. “Reuse”, one of environmentally conscious “3R” which is often heard in the modern society, had already been carried out in the Ancient Maya. 

今回のテーマは「古代マヤ文明と水」。お送りいただいた文章では、現代の水の利用法が、古代マヤ文明で既に行われていたことについて述べられています。マヤ文明というと、よく引き合いに出されるのは「マヤ暦」ですが、数学や建築の分野でも極めて高度な技術を持っていたようです。
